Valdosta’s girls basketball team advanced to the Class 6A state quarterfinals with a 44-42 win over Alcovy on Friday night.
“We wound up pulling it out through our hard work on defense,” Valdosta head coach E.A. Wilcox said. “We had a couple of turnovers here and there, but we wound up taking care of the basketball when we needed to, making the free throws that we needed to make. ... We had a well-rounded all-around game, and we won.”
Valdosta fell behind 20-7 in the first quarter, and trailed 28-21 at halftime. But the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Tigers 18-6 in the third quarter, and took a lead they would not relinquish.
Stormm Phillips led the Lady Wildcats with 10 points. Kaneshia Kimbrough had nine points, Destiny Covert added eight and Taylor Hauser had seven.
Valdosta (23-5) will travel to Langston Hughes (24-2) for the third round on Tuesday. The game will begin at 6 p.m. It will be the Lady Wildcats' first trip to the quarterfinals since 2001.
