While the football season may be over for many teams throughout the state and country, three local area teams are still in the hunt for respective championships.
Valwood will host Westwood in the Georgia Independent School Association Class AA state championship game Friday night at Goddard Field. The Valiants beat the Wildcats 48-18 earlier this season.
Also on Friday night, the Brooks Coun ty Trojans will visit the top-ranked Calhoun Yellow Jackets in the Georgia High School Association Class AA state quarterfinals. The second-ranked Trojans lost the coin toss that determined home field for the state playoff game on Saturday in Macon. Last year, the Trojans were eliminated from the playoffs with a 43-30 loss to the eventual state champion Yellow Jackets.
On Saturday, Valdosta State will face the Carson-Newman Eagles in the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals. The game will be held at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium, according to NCAA.com.
The Blazers defeated West Alabama 49-21 in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday, while Carson-Newman beat Lenoir-Rhyne.
VSU and Carson-Newman last played in the first round of the 2008 playoffs, which the Blazers won 24-20.
