VSU’s Brittney Nelson named Player of the Week

VALDOSTA — After just three games of the new season, Valdosta State claims its first Gulf South Conference Player of the Week award.

Brittney Nelson took home the honor this week for averaging 14 points and 17.5 rebounds per game in a pair of wins against in-state rivals Fort Valley State and Georgia Southwestern.

Nelson recorded two double-doubles for the week. She put 16 points and 14 rebounds on the Wildcats of FVSU, adding four assists and a steal. Then Nelson scored 12 points with an eye-popping 21 rebounds against Georgia Southwestern. She added five assists, four blocks and a steal. For the week, Nelson led the team in assists in addition to rebounding.

 Her 16 points against Fort Valley State marked a new career high for Nelson, as did her 21 rebounds against Georgia Southwestern. In addition, her tally of four blocks against the Canes is also a new career high.

 Nelson finished the week with 28 points, 35 rebounds, nine assists, four blocks, two steals and 76 minutes played.

She shot 50 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.
