Fresh off of sweeping the Crisp Co. tournament in Cordele, the Lowndes High Vikettes softball team hosted Colquitt County in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
The Vikettes stayed hot defeating the Packers in both games of the doubleheader.
“We faced a tough opponent today in Colquitt County,” said Lowndes Softball Coach Stuart Thomas. “Coach Mobley is doing some great things over there in his first year. I am just glad we were able to get to them early in the season because they are getting better and better every day.”
The Vikettes were in control of both games thanks to the power of the two starting pitchers that carried Lowndes through last weekend’s tournament.
In the first game of the afternoon, Haley Fowler was once again lights out for the Vikettes.
Fowler went seven innings, only giving up four hits while striking out five batters. Fowler did not allow an earned run, picking up her fourth win in as many days, 5-3.
Becca Prairie provided the Vikettes with plenty of offense; she went 2-3 in the game with three RBIs in the game.
In game two, the second of Lowndes’ dynamic duo of starting pitchers kept the ball rolling for the Vikettes.
Crystal Eason also pitched seven innings while only allowing five hits for one earned run.
Fowler made sure she was an asset to her team even when not pitching; she was 2-3 at the plate, scoring two runs.
Prairie added three more RBIs and the Vikettes won the second game of the doubleheader 7-1.
Thomas feels like with Fowler and Eason’s pitching, the Vikettes have a chance to continue the momentum they’ve been building.
“I tell the girls every day that if we will pitch well and play defense, we will be in every ballgame,” said Thomas. “We did that Tuesday against a scrappy opponent.
Crystal and Haley did a great job, and we were able to come up with the key hits when we needed them. We still have a ways to go, but these girls work very hard and we are getting there.”
With the sweep the Vikettes improve to 8-1-1 on the season, 2-0 in the region. Lowndes softball will travel to Adel to face Cook County on Sept. 4.
