Make it 5-for-5 in events won by Lowndes over rival Valdosta this week.
The Lowndes track and field teams narrowly edged rival Valdosta, and five other schools, Wednesday afternoon at the Lowndes High Quad Meet.
Lowndes’ boys team won the event with 190 points, while Valdosta finished second with 119 points.
On the girls’ side, Lowndes won by a mere 3 1/2 points over the reigning Region 1 champion Valdosta girls. Brooks County’s boys team finished third.
“It was a great meet with some exciting finishes,” Lowndes track coach Terry Quinn said. “And even some school records broken....It was a good atmosphere to run in with all the parent and community support in the stands.”
Valdosta has its final chances to record wins over Lowndes this week its varsity baseball team hosts a doubleheader against the Vikings at Bazemore Field tonight at 4:30 p.m. The Valdosta varsity soccer teams also visit Lowndes tonight starting at 6 p.m., in games being played at Valdosta State University.
Lowndes’ golf team won Valdosta’s Dynamite Goodloe Tournament on Monday, before the Lowndes tennis teams swept Valdosta on Tuesday.
Davonte Watts set Lowndes’ new school-record at Wednesday’s meet. Watts finished first overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.06, edging the 14-year-old school-record of 14.36 seconds held by Bradd Orr.
Team scores were kept based off an individual scoring scale. First place finishers received 10 points for their teams, while second place was awarded eight points. Third place was awarded six points, fourth place four points, fifth place two points and sixth place one point.
Along with his school-record, Watts helped the Lowndes 4X400 relay team finish first with a time of 3:34. Watts also finished second in the 300-meter hurdles.
Chance Roe finished first in the 1600-meter run for Lowndes, with teammate Tyler Thurman finishing 15 seconds behind in second.
Valdosta’s Nelson Herring finished first in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. In the 100-meter, Herring finished with a time of 10.69, before finishing the 200 in 22.15 seconds. Lowndes’ Brandon Roberts finished second in the 200-meter, with a time of 22.24.
In the 800-meter run, Richard Williams finished first with a time of 2:08 for Lowndes. Teammate Jadon Long finished second, two seconds behind.
Long finished first in the 3200-meter run, while Roe and Thurman finished second and third, respectively.
In the 400-meter run, Reaud Simms finished second and Seneca Fuller finished third.
Lowndes’ Tre’ Jackson finished first in the Disc throw, finishing with a distance of 133 feet, 33 inches.
In the Shot Put, Lowndes’ A.J. Harper finished first with a distance of 43-feet, 6 inches.
On the girls’ side, Valdosta’s 4X400 relay team finished first with a time of 4:14, edging Lowndes by five seconds.
Valdosta’s Stormm Phillips finished first in both the 100-meter and 200-meter runs. Phillips also finished first in the Long Jump, finishing with a time of 17-feet, 10 inches.
Lowndes’ Jacki Pinkerton edged out teammates Megan Charbeneau and Alison Peters in the 1600-meter run, while it was Charbeneau who edged out Peters for the win in the 3200-meter run.
In the 800-meter run, Jacki Pinkerton finished first for Lowndes with a time of 2:26, while Ashley Powell finished second.
Along with Lowndes and Valdosta, Brooks County, Berrien, Tift County, Madison County (Fla.) and Coffee all participated in the track meet on Wednesday.
