VALDOSTA — What has been a tradition in the Valdosta area for close to a decade now, the Doug Henderson III Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Friday, March 29, at the Valdosta Country Club.

This year’s event will serve as the ninth annual Doug Henderson III Memorial Golf Tournament, which raises money for the Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund, named after a former Valdosta High football player who lost his battle with a rare form of cancer in 2003.

Sponsorships and golf openings are still available for this year’s event, and will remain open through the week and upcoming weekend.

There are six unique sponsorships available for this year’s event, including a tournament sponsorship for $2,500. A T-shirt sponsorship is available for as little as $100.

The Doug Henderson III Memorial Golf Tournament is a 4-person scramble event, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The event costs $500 per team or $125 per individual player.

Since the establishment of the Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund, over $200,200 has been raised and distributed throughout the community. All that money remains in Lowndes County, something that makes the tournament and organization unique.

“The community has been very supportive,” said Bev Henderson, Doug III’s mother. “We keep the money here, and I think people like that.”

Through the memorial fund, organizations such as the Langdale Hospice House, LAMP, Habitat for Humanity, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Boys and Girls Club, the Lowndes County Partnership for Cancer Fund and Partnership for Health Fund, Birthright and South Georgia House of Hope have benefited from the memorial fund.

Organizers have also been able to give away 83 individual $1,000 college scholarships to local area students.

Doug Henderson III was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer. He passed away Sept. 6, 2003, after a valiant fight against the disease.

Following this year’s tournament, an awards reception and lunch will be held at the Country Club.
