USSSA tourney begins

VALDOSTA — The USSSA’s Georgia/Florida Showdown began Saturday in Valdosta and Lowndes County, and will continue play today.

The tournament field of 40 teams, ranging from the age groups of nine through 14, featured games at both Freedom and South Lowndes parks. The tournament is expected to bring in an economic impact of $300,000-$400,000.

Tournament play began without a hitch Saturday morning, as fans were able to enjoy games on every field at the two respected parks.

The tournament games dodged much of the heavy rain that soaked the Valdosta and Lowndes County area late Saturday afternoon, as play began at 8:30 in the morning.

Rain will play a small factor in today’s play, as the weather is not expected to clear up until the afternoon hours.
