Lady Blazers light up the Complex with 96-50 win

VALDOSTA — In front of a crowd of nearly 1200 rowdy Blazer fans who turned out for Monday night's home opener at the Complex, the Lady Blazers delivered an offensive performance for the ages with a 96-50 win over the Eagles of Trinity Baptist.

Newcomer April Thomas strung together basket upon basket, as she poured in 14 field goals in the contest, five of which were from beyond the arc. The junior transfer's performance was a familiar one for Lady Blazer fans, who witnessed the damage she dealt to Valdosta State last year as guard at Albany State.

But this time, her 26 point display went in favor of the red and black and fueled the Lady Blazers 46 point win.

Supporting Thomas offensively were five other Lady Blazers who put together double digits in the points column.

Jordan Waugh connected for 14 on the night, while Reshaundra Owens used her 4-5 outing from the field to score 11, and Courtney Sprague, Maggie Davis, and Kamyia Smith all chipped in with ten points each.

Owens turned in an influential night on defense also, as the freshman denied the Eagles with two blocked shots and two steals to go along with five rebounds on the night.

The Lady Blazers trailed right away in the contest after Jerricka Joyce struck from beyond the arc to open up the scoring, but by the 13:41 mark in the first half, Valdosta State had used a jumper by Smith to open up a 13-6 lead.

Valdosta State went into a scoring frenzy from that point forward, and never allowed the Eagles to threaten their decisive lead.

For the Eagles, Kaneesha Ellick shot well from close range with a 6-11 performance from the field and three out of four free throws, giving her a team high 15 points on the night.

The only other player to reach double digits offensively was Joyce, whose ten point tally came off of one three pointer and seven free throws.

The win gives VSU a 1-0 start to the young season and will continue on Saturday when the Lady Blazers host Webber International at The Complex.

The game is slated for a 4 p.m. tip, and can be seen live at www.vstateblazers.com.

The weird part was that Jeff Idelson didn't take a lot of time to answer.
"Is there any word or description that unifies this class?" was the query posed to the National Baseball Hall of Fame's president.
"The common thread among the six is profound humility," Idelson said of former managers Joe Torre, Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa, and former players Frank Thomas, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, all of whom will be inducted into the Hall today. "I don't think I realized that fully until I spent time with them in December. It was uncanny to me, for the cumulative star power in that group, the humility among them. I think that's felt really strongly with baseball fans."
