GSC football continues this weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The race to decide the 2013 Gulf South Conference Champion began last week with a trio of squads securing league victories.

Last week’s four-game slate included two televised matchups, starting on Thursday when No. 15 West Al- abama (2-1, 1-0) eased past GSC newcomer Florida Tech (1-2, 0-1) in the NCAA Division II Game of the Week in Melbourne, Fla. West Georgia (2-1, 0-0) hosted a Satur- day edition of the GSC-TV LIVE Game of the Week, falling at home to Lone Star Conference foe, No. 25 Mid- western State, 38-28.

Delta State (2-1, 1-0) hit the road for the third week in a row, earning a win in its GSC opener at No. 24 North Alabama (1-2, 0-1), 37-34. DSU scored 10 points in the final 2:45, including placekicker Vince Sciorrotta’s game-winning, 31-yard field goal with nine seconds re- maining in regulation.

No. 1 Valdosta State (2-0, 1-0) took to the field after a week off, shutting out in-state league Provisional Short- er (0-3, 0-1) at home on Saturday, 41-0. The Blazers ran their winning streak to 12 dating back to 2012 via their first shutout since 2010.

    Some milestones are destined to occur, like when Georgia Christian hosts David Emanuel on Aug. 22 in the Generals’ first varsity football game since the late 1960s.
    Others will have to wait and see what continues to take shape come Friday when teams can begin fall practice, and especially Aug. 1 when teams can suit up in pads for the first time, such as can Valdosta win its record 24th state title, or can Lowndes capture its fourth state championship under Randy McPherson, or can Valwood and coach Ashley Henderson play in its third straight GISA state championship game?
    As we start to find out the answers to those questions in just a few short weeks — the regular season is just 31 days away — there should be a few more milestones for area coaches to mark 2014 right along with the Generals getting back on the gridiron.
