BAINBRIDGE — The Valdosta High School and Valdosta Middle School cross country teams competed in the Bainbridge Bearcat Invitational on Saturday, with both squads enjoying some success. The VMS girls placed second in the event out of 14 schools. The top runner for the girls was 7th grader Madeline Posse, who finished 4th overall in a gutsy performance that saw her drop from third to thirteenth place after the first mile of the 2 mile race, only to rally and pass nine other runners before the finish. Other top scorers for the VMS girls in the 152-runner field were Sophia Noll (13th), Rachel Massingill (17th), Sarah Wehling (28th), and Nathalee Simonou (36th).

The VMS boys finished third out of 16 schools, led by 8th grader Noah Richards, who placed third overall in a large field of 189 runners. The other top finishers for the VMS boys were Will Krispin (10th), Davis Baldwin (31st), Braden Colbert (33rd), and Crane McAllister (35th).

The VHS boys and girls teams were not as successful as their VMS counterparts, with the boys finishing 11th out of 18 schools, and the girls 7th out of 15. The top runner for the boys, and the only VHS runner to make it onto the medal stand, was freshman Matthew Baun, who finished 8th out of 168 runners with a time of 18:10 in the 3.1 mile race. The top finisher for the girls was junior Leah Michaels, who placed 20th out of 141 runners.

The VHS cross country team is next in action at the Ware County Home Meet on Thursday (September 19), while the VMS squad will run in the Lee County High School Invitational on Saturday, September 21. Both the VHS and VMS teams will compete in the Thomasville High School Quail Trail Invitational at Pebble Hill Plantation in Thomasville on September 28.
