Berry named GSC’s Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Destiny Berry, the middle blocker for Valdosta State’s volleyball team, was named the Gulf South Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. The award was her first of the season.

The sophomore from Midlothian, Texas has been one of the top blockers in the conference all season, and proved it at the Red Elephant Café South Regional Crossover this past weekend.

She finished with 13 blocks, three of which were solos, in VSU’s four matches. She had five blocks against then-No. 2 Tampa and added four more, one solo, in a win over Saint Leo. Offensively, she added 22 kills on the week.

Berry leads the GSC in solo blocks this season with 21, and is second in the conference in total blocks (78) and blocks per set (0.87).

Berry and the Blazers will look to keep going against North Alabama, Christian Brothers and Union in a three-match home stand this weekend at The Complex.

Valdosta State is currently 13-11, and 5-6 in Gulf South Conference play.
