Blakely McClellan scored three goals, and led Valdosta State’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Shorter on Monday.
McClellan’s hat trick helped the Blazers improve to 12-2-2 on the season, and 5-1-1 in Gulf South Conference action. Shorter dropped to 4-11-1 and 3-5-1 in the GSC.
“We were able to all come together as a group and really show what we could do today,” Valdosta State head coach Mel Heinz said.
McClellan scored on all three shots she took, and the Blazers put on an offensive onslaught against the Hawks. Valdosta State took 20 shots (Rebecca Miller had a team-high four), and put 11 of them on goal. All of Miller's shots landed on goal, along with McClellan's three. Four other Blazers also put shots on goal.
The defense stood strong, only allowing six shots to the Hawks. Goalkeeper Olivia Mills made five saves to lead the VSU defense to its GSC-leading ninth shutout of the season.
Valdosta State took a 1-0 lead into the break, after only taking six first half shots. Arielle Sabina passed to McClellan for her first score of the match in the 38th minute.
The Blazers turned up the offensive heat in the second half, taking 14 shots. Sabina hooked up with McClellan for another score. Caroline Moore assisted on McClellan’s other goal.
Valdosta State returns home to face West Alabama on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex.
