VSU tennis sweeps West Alabama

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State used a strong doubles performance to defeat West Alabama 5-4 in Gulf South Conference men's tennis action at the VSU Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon.

 Valdosta State won all three doubles points to jump out to an early lead. Konstantin Kutchensko and Mario Navarro opened the match with an 8-2 victory over Honorio Fernandez and Manuel Grossman at

No. 1. Sebastian Jasyk and Tammo Haake downed Anton Ivanov and Adam Drysdale 8-5 at No. 2 while Andrew Harvin and Joachim Schemm topped Nestor Vargas and Luis Ruiz 9-7 at No. 3.

West Alabama claimed the first two singles points to pull within a single point. Simon Bardell defeated HArvin 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 for the first Tiger pointwhile Vargas downed Schemm 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 for the second.

Kutchensko put VSU on the brink of victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Fernandez at No. 1 only to have Ruiz top Haake 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 to keep UWA within a point.

Jasyk secured the VSU victory with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Drysdale at No. 4 while Ivanov defeated Navarro 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 to close out the match.


Lady Blazers win 8-1

Valdosta State turned in a dominating performance to defeat West Alabama 8-1 in Gulf South Conference women's tennis action at the VSU Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon.

 The Blazers claimed all three doubles points to jump out to an early lead. Jessica Tuggle and Jennifer Rink opened the scoring with an 8-0 victory over Dasha Popova and Emily Gerding at No. 3.

Then Michelle Fischer and Alina Nagel defeated Jill Furlong and Natalia Cardenas 8-1 at No. 1 Laura Ubeda and Juliana Boehm closed out doubles with a 9-7 come-from-behind victory over Helga Jeske and Shannon McEvoy at No. 2.

The Valdosta State dominance continued in singles play as it won the first three points. Fischer opened singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cardenas at No. 1 while Nagel defeated Jeske 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Boehm kept the momentum going with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Popova at No. 5 before Furlong topped Rink 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 for UWA's only point.

 Ubeda gave VSU's its seventh point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over McEvoy at No. 4 while Tuggle claimed a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 win over Gerding at No. 6.

Valdosta State returns to action Friday, March 1 when it hosts Lynn at the VSU Tennis Courts.
