The girls soccer teams at Lowndes and Valdosta were both victorious in Region 1-6A action Tuesday night.
The Lady Wildcats beat Colquitt County 1-0. Valdosta’s lone goal was scored by Amy Nelson.
Lowndes beat Tift County 2-1. Katie Willis and Chelan Worms scored goals for the Vikettes.
Lowndes and Valdosta meet for the first time this season Friday night at 6 p.m. The game will be played at Valdosta State University.
Clinch’s Hendricks records 17 Ks in win
HOMERVILLE — Clinch County pitcher Bill Hendricks struck out 17 batters during the Panthers’ 4-1 win over Telfair County Tuesday night. Along with his 17 strikeouts, Hendricks allowed just one runs on two hits, throwing for 73 strikes on 90 pitches. At the plate, Hendricks was 1 for 3 with a double for the Panthers. KJ Infinger and Trinity Cooper each drove in a run, while Brent Hendley drove in a pair of runs for Clinch County.
VSU golf struggles, finishes 16th
EATONTON — Valdosta State’s golf team finished 16th in the Bobcat Invitational at the Cuscowilla Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Blazers finished the tournament at 906 for the three rounds, 66 strokes over par. Lynn (286) shot a 14-over 854 to claim team medalist honors.
The Blazers finished 10 strokes ahead of UNC-Pembroke, which was the only team to place worse than VSU.
John Fordham (76) and Clarke Hendrick (75) each shot a 225 to tie for 54th, while Abdul Sihag (73) was a stroke back and tied for 58th. Nate Anderson (79) tallied a 233 to tie for 76th and Drew McGuire (81) was 86th at 240.
Armstrong Atlantic’s Gus Wagoner claimed individual medalist honors at 208.
Valdosta State returns to action Monday, April 1 when it opens play in the Buccaneer Invitational in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Valwood soccer splits with Sherwood
ALBANY — The Valwood varsity soccer teams split with Albany Christian on Tuesday.
The girls lost a heartbreaker 2-1 on penalty kicks, after playing through double overtime. Hollis Waldron started the night with a goal at the 15-minute mark, before Sherwood tied the score with 20 minutes remaining in the game. After a scoreless double overtime, Sherwood Christian beat Valwood on penalty kicks 3-2.
In the boys’ game, Valwood won 3-0. Austin Thompson scored Valwood’s first goal of the night, coming off a cross from Zack Savino. The Valiants scored again on a pair of goals from Savino, his 10th and 11th goals of the season, when he broke through a pair of defenders both times.
The Valwood girls are now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in region play. The Valwood boys are now 3-1 overall and 2-0 in region action.
Lowndes JV tennis sweeps Valdosta
VALDOSTA —Lowndes’ junior varsity tennis teams swept Valdosta Tuesday. In girls’ singles play, Tanner Gordon won 8-4, Carolina Corbitt won 8-4, and Taylor Everett won 8-1. In doubles action, Erin Jones and Taylor Grantham won 8-2, Kristen Dodd and Hannah Hornsby won 8-1, Zoey Ridge and Joanna Abbott won 8-5, Ani Mohanty and Holly Mihalick won 8-3. On the boys’ side, No. 1 singles Greg Rasmussen won 8-0 and No. 2 singles Loyce Turner won 8-2.
