Lady Blazers outlast Shorter in OT

ROME, Ga. — Valdosta State's women's basketball team scored eight overtime points to score a season-high 70 points and beat Shorter 70-65 in Gulf South Conference women's basketball action at the Winthrop-King Centre Saturday afternoon.

With the win, VSU improved to 13-8 overall and 6-7 in GSC play while Shorter fell to 13-8 and 8-5 in the GSC.

Brittney Nelson hit a three-pointer with five seconds to go in regulation to force the overtime, VSU's fourth extra period game this season, and the Lady Blazers never looked back.

After Shorter scored the first bucket of the overtime, Kourtnee Williams tied the game with a basket and Courtney Sprague added a lay-up to put VSU in front for good. After a Ieshia Alexander free throw for SU, Kamyia Smith added a Blazer lay-up and Williams hit two free throws to close out the scoring.

Shorter scored the first four points of the game and held the advantage for the first 10 minutes of the game. Valdosta State, which connected on eight of its first 13 field goal attempts, kept the game close and eventually evened the contest at 16-16 with 10:18 to play in the first half.

Kourtnee Williams eventually gave VSU the lead on a fast break lay-up two minutes later and, on the Lady Blazers' next trip down the floor, grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Brooke Satterfield for a three-pointer to help Valdosta State extend its advantage as Valdosta State eventually built a 33-25 halftime edge.

The Lady Blazer lead grew to as much as 13 in the opening moments of the second half, only to have the Lady Hawks use a 17-4 run to tie the game at 45-45 with 10:48 to play. The remainder of regulation featured eight lead changes and six ties as neither team led by more than three in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Valdosta State shot 56.9 percent while setting a new season high with the 70 points. VSU made 29-of-51 field goal attempts, including 10-of-20 three-pointers, but was out-scored 17-2 at the free throw line.

Nelson led Valdosta State with 21 points while Williams, who had a team-high eight rebounds, added 14 and Satterfield 12.

Shorter shot just 36.8 percent from the floor, where it made 21-of-57 shots. Karisma Boykin and Kristin Nash had 16 points each to lead the Lady Hawks while Alexander added 13 and Lindsey Crawford 10.

The Lady Blazers return home to The Complex to face in-state rival West Georgia on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. in Gulf South Conference action.
