Meindl, Masked Avenger take 1st in Grand Prix

New Year’s Eve 5K held tonight

VALDOSTA — Rebecca Meindl of Valdosta and the Masked Avenger were the overall winners of the 2012 Get Active South Georgia Grand Prix running series.

Meindl accumulated 482 total points in the 16-race series. She earned points in 12 of the 16 races, and placed high in several of the series’ biggest races, including a second-place finish in the Labor Day 5K and top-six finishes in the Thanksgiving Day 5K and the Memorial Day 5K.

The Masked Avenger, a runner from Valdosta who wears a mask when he runs, earned 594 total points, 107 more than his closest competitor. He won two of the Grand Prix’s biggest races, the Memorial Day 5K and the Thanksgiving Day 5K, and placed in the top five in two other big races, the Valdosta 5K and the Labor Day 5K.

Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta finished second in the men’s standings with 487 points. David Burnett of Valdosta was third with 376 points. Tyler Thurman of Valdosta was fourth with 270 points, and Jim Hall of Valdosta was fifth with 241 points. Matthew Baun, a 13-year-old from Valdosta, was sixth (212 points), followed by Jackson Williams of Willacoochie (207), 14-year-old Chance Roe of Valdosta (197), 16-year-old Milo Mirate of Valdosta (188) and James Marino of Valdosta (177).

Debbie Green of Valdosta finished second in the women’s Grand Prix standings with 475 points. Heather Kelly of Valdosta was third with 379 points. Martha Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was fourth with 326 points. Alice Smoot of Valdosta was fifth with 296 points.

Meindl wasn’t the only member of her family to take first place in the Grand Prix. Eleven-year-old Brooke Meindl placed first in the 11-and-under age group. Brooke was sixth overall in the Grand Prix with 264 points.

Billie Washburn of Valdosta was seventh (243 points), followed by Janis Lee of Hahira (211), Melissa Roe of Valdosta (210) and 16-year-old Alison Peters of Valdosta (205).

Brooke Meindl, Katelin Stecz of Valdosta, Peters, Amber Elam of Valdosta, Jamie Brown of Valdosta, Kelly, Rebecca Meindl, Martha Mazurkiewicz, Green, Washburn, Smoot and Jeanette MacDonald of Sylvester were the top finishers in their age groups.

In the men’s standings, Cody Pezent of Adel, Baun, Thurman, Christopher Rice of Valdosta, Williams, the Masked Avenger, Burnett, Frank Ryan of Hahira, Rick Mazurkiewicz, Steven Dansereau of Lakeland, Bob Moon of Valdosta, Galen Mirate of Valdosta, Hall, Bob Bowen of Nashville and Joe Christian of Naylor were the top finishers in their age groups.

The 2013 Grand Prix will begin tonight, on the last day of 2012.

The New Year’s Eve 5K will be held on a course at Lowndes High School. The race will begin at 9 p.m.

Registration starts at 8 p.m. Runners can get a registration form at the race, or online at runningintheusa.com.

The entry fee is $10 per runner. Runners can reduce their entry fee to $7 per person by bringing a canned good to be donated to a local food bank or a new unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots.
