Gone but not forgotten

10th annual Doug Henderson Memorial Tournament held at Valdosta Country Club

VALDOSTA — The 10th annual Doug Henderson III Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Friday morning at the Valdosta Country Club.

Twenty-nine teams competed in this year's edition of the tournament, but it was Team Darren White who came out on top, shooting a 54 to bring home first place.

Darren White, Tyler Dallas, Brian Massingill, and Valdosta High golf coach Justin Henderson made up the winning foursome.

Team Phil Alday (Al Armstrong, Joe Brogden, Richard Dembkowski, Fennis Miller) came up one stroke short of the lead, finishing second with a 55.

Three teams shot a 56, but due to regression Team Valdosta Electric (Josh Burk, Josh Turner, Eric Shelton, Jared McGahee) earned third place, Team Ambling University Development (Greg Blais, Greg Reid, Greg Hunter, Bubba Highsmith) finished fourth, and Team First Federal (Tyler Willett, Josh Hubby, Travis Wooldridge, Rex Taylor) came in fifth place.

The rest of the top eight consisted of Team Charles Kent (Charles Kent, Joe Hayes, Chase Hankel, Matt Mink) shooting 57, Team Jeff Lovell (Rusty Trancygier, VSU football coach David Dean, Valwood football coach Ashley Henderson, Austin Thomas) shooting 58, and Team Southwest Georgia Bank (Jud Moritz, Trip Singletary, Bill Holland, Jeff Hanson) shooting a 59.

The tournament also featured contests like closest to the pin and longest drive which were won by Troy Black and Justin Henderson, respectively.

All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund, a charitable fund that supports a number of organizations in the Valdosta area.

Doug Henderson III was a Valdosta native who graduated from Valdosta High School and the University of Georgia and worked as an accountant at South Georgia Medical Center before being diagnosed with synovial sarcoma, a rare type of cancer. He passed away on Sept. 6, 2003. After his death, his family started the Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund, with the intention of helping out charitable organizations in the community.

The Braves seemed almost businesslike in their approach -- something you might expect from a trio that won so consistently.

The weird part was that Jeff Idelson didn't take a lot of time to answer.
"Is there any word or description that unifies this class?" was the query posed to the National Baseball Hall of Fame's president.
"The common thread among the six is profound humility," Idelson said of former managers Joe Torre, Bobby Cox and Tony La Russa, and former players Frank Thomas, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, all of whom will be inducted into the Hall today. "I don't think I realized that fully until I spent time with them in December. It was uncanny to me, for the cumulative star power in that group, the humility among them. I think that's felt really strongly with baseball fans."

It’s a task that also has the elite group searching for answers as to how to get past the state championship road block in recent years, aside from Valwood’s GISA Class AA crown in 2012.
