VSU women tennis fall in GSC tourney

Montgomery. Ala. — The Valdosta State Lady women's tennis team eliminated North Alabama 5-0 in the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Saturday before falling 5-0 to the West Florida Argonauts in the championship match at Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala..

In the first match of the day, the Lady Blazers cruised past the Lions beginning with an 8-4 win for Michelle Fischer and Sabrina Schmidt over Natalia Barragan and Avery King at No. 1 doubles.

Jennifer Rink and Jessica Tuggle fell 8-3 to Olivera Ngouabeu and Bruna Viera at No. 2, but Julianna Boehm and Moriah Hibbard blistered Madison Patey and Morgan Jose 8-3 in the ensuing pro set at No. 3 to give VSU a 2-1 lead heading into singles.

The Blazers needed just three singles victories to take the match, and Fischer, Laura Ubeda, and Sabrina Schmidt answered the call.

Fischer handily defeated Ngouabeu at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0, before Ubeda blasted Barragan at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-1 win. The third and final victory for Schmidt came at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-1 over King.

The triumph over the Lions earned the Lady Blazers an opportunity to compete for the GSC Title, but the squad was denied by the top-seeded Argonauts.

Valdosta State was unable to establish any momentum early in the match, as West Florida picked up three straight wins in doubles action to take an early 3-0 lead in the match.

Fischer and Schmidt suffered a loss to Monika Kochinova and Laure-Eline Faure 8-4 at No. 1, and the struggle continued for the Lady Blazers at No. 2, as Rink at Tuggle were outlasted 8-3 by Kat Kikosavljevic and Francesca Franchin.

UWF's team of Nina Bubelova and Fernanda Amaral finished off doubles play at No. 3 with an 8-5 win over Boehm and Hibbard at No. 3.

In singles action, the Argonauts secured their championship bid with a 6-3, 6-1 win for Kochanova over Fischer at No. 1, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win for Franchin over VSU's Joanna Lario at No. 6.

Forrest Gump once said, "I used to run to get to where I was going, but I never thought it would take me anywhere." In the case of 18 year-old Mary Alice Smoot, anywhere is Tampa, Fla.
After four years of unparalleled success running cross-country at Valwood, Smoot will continue running competitively next season at the University of Tampa.

  • Lowndes_McPherson.jpg Milestones on tap for upcoming season

Some milestones are destined to occur, like when Georgia Christian hosts David Emanuel on Aug. 22 in the Generals’ first varsity football game since the late 1960s.
Others will have to wait and see what continues to take shape come Friday when teams can begin fall practice, and especially Aug. 1 when teams can suit up in pads for the first time, such as can Valdosta win its record 24th state title, or can Lowndes capture its fourth state championship under Randy McPherson, or can Valwood and coach Ashley Henderson play in its third straight GISA state championship game?
As we start to find out the answers to those questions in just a few short weeks — the regular season is just 31 days away — there should be a few more milestones for area coaches to mark 2014 right along with the Generals getting back on the gridiron.

With football summer workouts in full swing, occasionally the intensity and competitive drive can wane going against teammates. But on Friday, Valwood, Brookwood, Lanier County and Tiftarea Academy broke up the monotony by meeting at Goddard Field for a four-team, 7-on-7 passing league.

If Ed Pilcher had his way, Berrien High would never throw the football.
But that doesn't mean the veteran coach doesn't enjoy the opportunity that a passing league, or the six-team passing camp at Cairo on Thursday morning, can provide his Rebels.
