Needmore Speedway prepares for Early Bird 75

NORMAN PARK — Needmore Speedway, located in Norman Park, is getting ready for 3 days of stock car racing including a special 75 lap Late Model feature on Sunday paying $10,000 to the winner.

The action starts Friday night with a full practice session for all cars, gates open at 4 p.m.

Saturday features qualifying races and races in all classes — Late Models, Limiteds, Super Streets, Hobbies, Enduros plus the open wheel modified Skeeter cars and Mini Stocks. Gates open earlier on Saturday, at noon, with racing getting underway at 3 p.m.

The track will open Sunday at 10 a.m. for the drivers and fans with a special church service at noon.

Sunday afternoon will be busy with more feature racing in all classes including consolation races for those drivers who did not make the field in qualifying. These start at 2 p.m.

The Late Model main event, 75 laps on the 3/8's mile oval will have the fastest 24 cars on the grid.

According to track promoters the $10,000 winners purse has peaked the interest of some real "hot-shoes" including Brandon Overton, Mark Whitener, Darrell Padget, Ivedent Lloyd, Shane Clanton, Jason Fitzgerald, Joe Armistead, to mention a few.

These drivers plus Needmore's regulars, Gene Ross, Lee Newsome, Lavon Sloan and the 2013 Needmore Speedway track champion Kelly Walker are all set to do some high octane racing for their share of the winners purse.

  • Lowndes_McPherson.jpg Milestones on tap for upcoming season

Some milestones are destined to occur, like when Georgia Christian hosts David Emanuel on Aug. 22 in the Generals’ first varsity football game since the late 1960s.
Others will have to wait and see what continues to take shape come Friday when teams can begin fall practice, and especially Aug. 1 when teams can suit up in pads for the first time, such as can Valdosta win its record 24th state title, or can Lowndes capture its fourth state championship under Randy McPherson, or can Valwood and coach Ashley Henderson play in its third straight GISA state championship game?
As we start to find out the answers to those questions in just a few short weeks — the regular season is just 31 days away — there should be a few more milestones for area coaches to mark 2014 right along with the Generals getting back on the gridiron.
