Caitlyn Calhoun was nearly untouchable last week.
The Valdosta State sophomore pitcher was rewarded Tuesday when she was named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week.
In 12 innings against Albany State and West Georgia, Calhoun allowed just two hits and six walks while striking out 15. She held opposing hitters to a .054 batting average and posted a 0.58 ERA during the week as the Blazers won all five games to improve to 35-12.
The highlight of the week was Calhoun’s start Saturday against the GSC rival Wolves. Hurling Valdosta State past West Georgia, Calhoun hurled a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the seven innings. It was the first no-hitter of her career.
VSU senior pitcher Brianna Hancock threw two no-hitters earlier this season, March 18 against Miles — she walked one — and March 22 against Christian Brothers — again walking just one — earning the ensuing GSC weekly honor.
For the season, Calhoun now has a 2.53 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 47 innings as she helps lead the Blazers into this week’s regular-season finale, a three-game series against Lee at Steel’s Diamond. The Flames and Blazers meet in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday and a 1 p.m. finale Saturday.
West Georgia’s Nicole Yancey was named the Player of the Week after hitting .556 with three home runs and nine RBIs. The three home runs pushed the senior past former Alabama-Huntsville star Stephanie Pinto as the conference’s career home run leader with 58. Valdosta State junior Courtney Albritton is one behind her, while leading the league in home runs this season with 21. Yancey has 20.
