Lowndes was one win away from a trip to the Class AAAAAA state semifinals, and the success by the Vikings this season showed when the All-Region 1 baseball teams were announced Monday.
Lowndes had a region-high five players named to the First Team, including Co-Pitcher Cory Pope, while having one named to the Second Team and two named Honorable Mention.
Lowndes’ head coach, Danny Redshaw, was also named the region’s Coach of the Year.
Colquitt County and Tift County each had a region-high nine players between both teams and the honorable mention list, while Camden County had eight.
Valdosta had three players honorable, along with Coffee, while Brunswick had just two.
Lowndes’ Pope, who finished the season with a 7-2 record with a 2.71 earned run average in 80 innings pitched, shared the region’s top pitching honor with Camden County’s Wyatt Holloway.
Colquitt County’s Aubrey McCarty was named the region’s Hitter of the Year, while the Vikings’ Garrett Fuller was awarded the Student-Athlete Academic Award.
Valdosta State signee David Wortham joined Pope on the First Team, along with junior catcher Josh Day, designated player Buck Carter and pitcher Logan Hutchinson.
Cam Buescher was Lowndes’ only Second Team honoree, while Valdosta’s David Posas and Drew Morrison were each honored.
Lowndes’ Blake Smith and Garrett Fuller were named Honorable Mention, along with Valdosta’s Jacob Davis.
The Vikings won the Region 1 championship, beating out Colquitt County by one game.
Camden County finished third, followed by Tift County, Coffee, Valdosta and Brunswick.
Lowndes, Colquitt County and Tift County all advanced into the state quarterfinals. Colquitt County was swept in two games to two-time defending state champion Parkview. Lowndes and Tift County each fell in their third games.
