VALDOSTA — Aragon goes saves tourney, makes cut

The winner of the Webcom Tour’s WNB Golf Classic in Texas two weeks ago, Alex Aragon struggled with a 2-over par opening round. On Friday, Aragon salvaged his tournament and shot even par to make the cut. Aragon is currently 2-under par for the tournament, tied for 51st.

Mulroy withdraws

2009 South Georgia Classic champion Garth Mulroy withdrew from the South Georgia Classic following nine holes on Friday. Mulroy double bogeyed the par-3 No. 14 and finished his first nine holes — he started on No. 10 — with four straight pars. Then he withdrew for unknown reasons. He was 1-over par for the tournament when he withdrew, just two strokes behind the cut line.

Wilkinson disqualified

Tim Wilkinson was disqualified from the tournament prior to the start of the second round Friday morning after tournament officials discovered he signed a wrong scoreboard following his Thursday round. Wilkinson had the wrong score written down for a hole, which is ground for a disqualification. He shot an opening round 77 on Thursday.

High of the day

Seth McCain shot an 11-over 83 in Friday’s round, adding to his 4-over 76 from Thursday. He finished the tournament at 15-over par, in sole possession of 155th place. Woody Austin, the 2007 PGA Championship runner-up, shot a 10-over par, along with Reid Edstrom, in Friday’s second round. Austin finished the tournament at 6-over par, while Edstrom finished at 11-over par.

Past champions miss cut

None of the four past South Georgia Classic champions will be in this year’s field. While Garth Mulroy withdrew from the event, all the other past champions are also going home this weekend after missing the cut.

Bryan DeCorso, the 2008 winner, shot even-par this weekend but finished the event at 7-over par. Ewan Porter, the 2010 champion, shot a disastrous 6-over on Friday and missed the cut at 8-over par. John Kimbell, the 2007 champion, shot a even par Friday and missed the cut at 2-over par.

  • Lowndes_McPherson.jpg Milestones on tap for upcoming season

Some milestones are destined to occur, like when Georgia Christian hosts David Emanuel on Aug. 22 in the Generals’ first varsity football game since the late 1960s.
Others will have to wait and see what continues to take shape come Friday when teams can begin fall practice, and especially Aug. 1 when teams can suit up in pads for the first time, such as can Valdosta win its record 24th state title, or can Lowndes capture its fourth state championship under Randy McPherson, or can Valwood and coach Ashley Henderson play in its third straight GISA state championship game?
As we start to find out the answers to those questions in just a few short weeks — the regular season is just 31 days away — there should be a few more milestones for area coaches to mark 2014 right along with the Generals getting back on the gridiron.
