Daly closes round at 2-under par

VALDOSTA — John Daly birdied four holes and withstood a double bogey on the par-4 No. 15 to finish his opening round of the South Georgia Classic at 2-under par, currently putting him in a tie for 11th.

“I didn’t hit it very good,” Daly said. “I hit it great off the tee today, it was just my middle irons were off. I didn’t get a lot of close shots. I had a lot of saves, as you saw on nine. But I putted really good today. I have to get my middle irons. They’re awful right now."

Bouncing back was a theme for Daly’s day. With solid tee shots followed by struggling iron shots, Daly was able to rebound and save par and sometime birdie on the majority of the holes.

On his final hole of the day, the par-4 ninth, his approach shot landed in the bunker, but he chipped out and landed within feet of the hole, eventually saving par.

After teeing off on the 10th tee, Daly was relatively consistent Thursday, with his only blemish coming on the par-4 15th when he double bogeyed.

“I hit a 7-iron or 8-iron into No. 15 and came up short,” Daly said. “It was probably about 8-feet at one time and it came all the way down the green. I hit a pretty bad chip and it rolled back down and then I hit a pretty good chip and it just kind of stuck. It was bad chipping on that one.”

Besides his double bogey, Daly posted birdies on the par-4 No. 12, par-3 No. 17, par-5 No. 5 and the par-3 No. 8, finishing his round at 2-under.

“That was the only hiccup of the whole round — the 15th hole,” Daly said. “I think I played two or three under par in from there. I am real satisfied with the way I am putting and hitting the driver. The other 12 clubs need a lot of work right now.”

More on John Daly’s round will be available in Friday’s edition of The Valdosta Daily Times.
