Lowndes prepares for season opener

VALDOSTA — Each season seems to be the one when Lowndes head football coach Randy McPherson leads the Vikings back to their rightful place among Georgia high school football dynasties, and this season is no different.

Once again, the Vikings are loaded with talent and experience on both sides of the ball, and are looking to make a run at a state championship.

Lowndes’ offense may experience some growing pains early on. They will start an underclassmen at quarterback.

Austin Dixon got a lot of reps during the offseason, and he started in the Vikings’ scrimmage with Thomasville on Aug. 16; however, it was, arguably, freshman Tai Hatcher that moved the best during the scrimmage.

Hatcher’s ability to run makes the Vikings’ offense a bit more dynamic, forcing the defense to account for the quarterback at all times.

Luckily for Lowndes, an experienced group returns up front this season, including the addition of Georgia recruit Dyshon Sims.

A strong offensive line should provide Lowndes’ young quarterback to settle into his role leading the offense.

Ahman Brown will replace Nick Burgman in the Vikings backfield and Brandon Roberts should provide a playmaking threat on the outside.

While Lowndes’ offense has the tools to be very intriguing, the Vikings will once again hang their hats on the defensive side of the ball, which looked down-right scary in the scrimmage against Thomasville.

The defense of the Vikings looked to be extremely fast, swarming to the ball and bringing the Thomasville ball carriers down in the backfield on multiple occasions.

Georgia Tech commit Tre Jackson is the unquestioned leader of Lowndes’ defense.

Entering his third season starting in the middle of the defense, Jackson will need to provide the leadership the Vikings need to stay focused throughout the season.

If the Vikings can stay focused, any team is going to have a tough time handing Lowndes a loss.

On Friday, Luella will travel to Martin Stadium, this is when the Vikings begin their quest to remind high school football fans where Lowndes belongs in any 6A championship discussion - at the top.
