Laura Ubeda wins in Thomasville Collegiate Invitational

VALDOSTA — Laura Ubeda of Valdosta State women's tennis outperformed the competition at the Thomasville Collegiate Invitational this past weekend to take home the winner's trophy in Women's Open Singles play at the Glen Arven Country Club.

Ubeda opened up play as the No. 5 seed in an eight player bracket, she began by facing Heather Walton of West Florida.

 The VSU sophomore defeated Walton on Saturday 7-5, 4-6 and 7-6 (5) to advance to the semifinal round on Sunday, where she handily defeated Silvia Martinkova of South Alabama 6-2, 6-3.

In the final round, Ubeda squared off against Monica Mitta, the No. 4 seed in the tournament from South Alabama, in a tightly contested match.

 Following an early lead taken by Ubeda after defeating Mitta 6-1 in the first set, Mitta bounced back to take the second set 3-6.

A thrilling finish saw the two battle it out with Ubeda winning the match with a 7-6 (8) victory in the third and final set.

Other players of note competing in the tournament included Joachim Schemm and Sebastian Jasyk, who both advanced to the semifinal round of Men's Open Singles competition before falling to Bruno Savi of West Florida.

Francisco Yim Kim, a freshman, defeated Grayson Goldin from Florida State in the final consolation round of Men's Open Singles, while Sabrina Schmidt and Jennifer Rink both made appearances in the semifinal round of Women's Open Singles competition.

In Men's Open Doubles, Jasyk and Mario Navarro teamed up to move on to the semifinal round before

losing to West Florida's Alex Peyrot and Domenico Sano.
