VSU men’s tennis team dominates Mississippi College

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Valdosta State men’s tennis team won the first eight points of the match, and defeated Mississippi College 8-1 on Thursday at the Carson Tennis Complex.

The Blazers started the match by winning all three doubles points. Andrew Harvin and Joachim Schemm earned an 8-3 win over Matthew Martin and Taylor Griffith at No. 3 doubles. Taamo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk topped Jacob Womack and Dudley Lampton 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Konstantin Kutschenko and Mario Navarro closed out doubles with an 8-6 victory over Chris Wootton and Christian Branning at No. 1 doubles.

Navarro earned a 6-0, 6-0 straight set victory over Womack at No. 3 singles. Then Kutschenko topped Wootton 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to seal the victory. Schemm got a 6-4, 6-0 win over Branning at No. 2. Jasyk topped Martin 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and Haake defeated Lampton 5-7, 6-0, 11-9 at No. 8. Griffith gave the Choctaws their only point with a 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 11-9 win over Harvin at No. 6.

The Blazers return to action Friday at 8 a.m., when they take on Concordia.

VSU women’s tennis falls 5-0 to No. 4 BYU-Hawaii

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Fourth-ranked BYU-Hawaii topped Valdosta State 5-0 in women’s tennis action at the Carson Tennis Complex Thursday.

The Seasiders opened the scoring as the nation’s top-ranked doubles team of Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu defeated Michelle Fischer and Alina Nagel 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Jade Griffin and Sasha Ulbrichtova defeated Jessica Tuggle and Jennifer Rink at No. 2. The ninth-ranked team of Marietta Tuionetoa and Marika Kobayashi closed out doubles with an 8-3 victory over Julianna Boehm and Laura Ubeda at No. 2.

Liu, the nation’s seventh-ranked player, picked up the fourth point for BYU-Hawaii when Nagel was forced to retire due to injury. Hwang, the top ranked player in the nation, defeated No. 26 Fischer 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1.

The Lady Blazers return to action Friday at 1 p.m., when they take on Concordia.
