VSU Volleyball Falls 3-1 at Shorter

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State's woes on the road continued on Saturday with a 1-3 loss to the Hawks of Shorter in Rome.

Shorter jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 25-16 and 25-19 wins in the first two sets, but the Blazers kept the match alive with a narrow 26-24 win in set three.

Shorter was able to retaliate in the fourth set and come out ahead in a tight 25-23 victory to seal the win for the Hawks.

The loss was the second in as many days for Valdosta State and dropped the Blazers to a 16-11 overall record, 8-6 in the conference.

Shorter boosted their record to 15-9 overall and 8-5 in conference play.

Shorter, who fell to the Blazers earlier this season, evened up the 2013 series when they capitalized on a .237 hitting percentage next to Valdosta State's .147 performance.

The Hawks also teamed up for nine service aces in the contest.

Shorter outside hitter Elizabeth Dowd carried the Hawks offensively with 14 kills and a .379 hitting percentage along with two aces and ten digs.

The Hawks benefitted from a balanced attack, as Jasmine Crook, Anna Graham, and Erica Baker combined with Dowd for 46 of Shorter's 55 kills. Each of the four players had at least ten kills in the contest.

For the Blazers, Jenna Kirkwood blasted 14 kills to improve her season total to 321.

The junior is now second among all GSC players in the category.

Valdosta State will play one final road game at Albany State on Tuesday before returning home to host four matches at The Complex to close out the regular season.

Tuesday's match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m..
