Blazers look to rebound in battle for the Peach Basket

COLUMBUS — Coming off its first loss in more than 12 months, Valdosta State looks to get back on the winning track as it travels to Carrollton, Ga. for the "Battle for the Peach Basket" versus West Georgia. The game marks VSU's second straight road trip and the second straight year the Blazers have visited Carrollton. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.

Valdosta State is averaging 39.2 points and 431.2 yards of total offense per game, including 211.6 rushing and 219.6 passing. The Blazers are led by sophomore running backs Cedric O'Neal and Austin Scott, who have combined to rush for 935 yards and eight touchdowns on the year. O'Neal currently ranks second in the GSC in rushing while Scott is third. Quarterback Cayden Cochran has passed for 1,076 yards and 10 scores while a balanced receiving corps features four receivers with at least 14 catches on the year. Defensively, the Black Swarm surrenders just 17.4 points and 355.4 yards a game. Linebackers Chris Pope and Jeremy Grable lead the unit with 41 and 40 tackles, respectively, while defensive tackle Lawrence Virgil has 6.5 tackles for loss. The Blazer defense has tallied 15 sacks on the year while creating 10 turnovers.

West Gerogia has rushed for 1,266 yards and passed for 1,017 through its first six contests while averaging 31.8 points and allowing 20.2 points a game. Junior Seth Hinsley leads the offense. He has carried the ball 59 times for 401 yards and three scores. Senior quarterback Austin Trainor has passed for 600 yards and four while Quan Jones is second on the team in both rushing and receiving and has scored six touchdowns. The Wolves' defense surrenders 303.3 yards of total offense each game, including 204.7 on the ground, but just 98.7 through the air. West Georgia has recorded 13 sacks on the season and has forced 14 turnovers. Linebacker Tyrell Adams has tallied a team-best 45 tackles on the season, including six for loss.
