PENSACOLA, Fla. —
Valdosta State defeated Eckerd 3-2 in the first match of the day, before falling 3-1 to Florida Southern in the second match at the UWF Crossover Friday.
The Blazers (14-6) were sharp during the first match as they hit .243 as a team and had six blocks. They won the first game of the match 25-23 while hitting .320, only to fall 25-17 in the second game. VSU responded with a 25-20 victory in game three, only to drop a 26-24 decision in the fourth game, a contest that saw 14 ties and seven lead changes. Valdosta State played its best in the deciding fifth game as it committed just one error and had 12 kills in a 15-13 victory.
Jenna Kirkwood had 23 kills, against just three errors for a .345 hitting percentage, 14 digs and a block assist to lead Valdosta State in the match while Jessica Codato had four kills, 34 assists, 12 digs and three block assists.
Florida Southern never trailed in the second match as it won the first two games, 25-23 and 25-20, before Valdosta State responded with a 25-19 victory in game three. The fourth game went down to the wire as the Mocs claimed a 27-25 victory to take the match.
odato had five kills, 24 assists and 22 digs in the match to lead VSU. Kirkwood added 18 more kills and had 11 digs.
VSU concludes the Crossover with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Blazers will face Barry at 10:30 a.m. and No. 3 Tampa at 5:15 p.m.
