VSU Volleyball wins sixth straight

VALDOSTA — With a six game winning streak on the line on Friday night at the Complex, Valdosta State volleyball cruised by the Lee Flames to claim a 3-0 victory and improve to 11-2 on the season and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference.

With the win, the 2013 Blazers can now claim the best start to a season since 1999 and a convincing presence atop the league standings. Valdosta State is now the only team in the Gulf South Conference who is yet to be defeated.

The Blazers took the match with 25-16, 26-24, and 25-20 victories while receiving contributions from several key players throughout the course of the contest.

Destiny Berry continued her consistent performance this season with a .353 hitting percentage and three blocks on the night, while Jenna Kirkwood slammed a team high 14 kills, and Jessica Codato finished with a double-double, dishing out 27 assists and picking up 12 digs in the match.

Natalia Campos led the Blazers on defense with 14 digs, many of which were a result of lunging and diving pick ups from the freshman.

As a team the Blazers swung for a .196 hitting percentage, but strong defense prevailed as VSU was able to hold Lee to a .111 percentage on the night. Valdosta State also denied several scoring opportunities for the Flames with 10 blocks.

The Blazers head right back into action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at The Complex, hosting the Shorter Hawks. The Hawks enter tomorrow's match with a 4-4 overall record, 0-2 in league play.
