VALDOSTA — Valwood boys win playoff opener

VALDOSTA — Valwood’s boys soccer team won its first round playoff game on Tuesday, defeating Trinity Christian 5-3 in overtime.

Zack Savino scored three goals for the Valiants. Ty Petermann had a goal and an assist.

Savino’s goal in the opening minutes gave the Valiants a 1-0 lead, but Trinity scored twice to take the lead. The score remained 2-1 until late in regulation, when Savino headed the ball into the goal off of a corner kick by Gabe Garcia. That goal sent the game into overtime.

Valwood then scored three times in overtime, and earned a 5-3 win.

Garcia had two assists for Valwood, and Hank Evans added one.

Valwood will host First Presbyterian Christian Academy from Hinesville in the second round of the GISA Class AA playoffs on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Valwood Middle beats Crisp Academy

CORDELE — Valwood’s middle school baseball team defeated Crisp Academy 2-1 on Tuesday.

Dane Fafard pitched a complete game for the Valiants. William Clifton drove in the winning run.

Lowndes girls drop final soccer match of regular season

VALDOSTA — Carlie Couch scored three goals and led Tift County’s girls soccer team to a 4-3 win over Lowndes on Tuesday.

Couch, who has signed with Furman, also had an assist in the win.

Ashley Miller scored two goals for Lowndes. Alex Haun also had a goal.

Lowndes’ girls soccer team finished the regular season 13-3. The Vikettes will host Kennesaw Mountain next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

Berrien beats Brooks, 11-1

NASHVILLE — Berrien’s baseball team defeated Brooks County 11-1 in six innings on Tuesday.

Devonte Bass went 3 for 4 with a solo home run for the Rebels in the win. Travis Branham was 3 for 3. Taylor Griner went 2 for 3, scored two runs and also drove in a run. Shawn Witt was 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Joe McCranie was the winning pitcher, pitching all six innings, allowing one run and striking out six batters.
