VALDOSTA — The Valdosta State football team will open spring football practice today, beginning defense of its 2012 national championship.

The practice will be one of 15 the team will conduct this spring, including its spring game that will be held Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m.

Despite conflicting reports that the Blazers were not going to hold a spring game, the university athletic department announced the plans on Thursday, along with the dates for spring practice.

VSU also released that the Blazer softball and football teams will be honored at the State Capitol Wednesday, Feb. 27, for claiming national championship victories last year.

Following today’s practice in helmets, the Blazers will practice Saturday in helmets and Sunday in shells, before taking two days off.

The Blazers will return to the practice field Wednesday, their first day in full pads this spring.

The team will practice Thursday, Friday and Saturday of that week, before returning for practices that Monday, Feb. 25, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 2, of the next week.

The Blazers conclude their spring practice with three more practices the week of March 4, before holding their spring game March 9.

Details for the Blazers’ visit to the State Capitol have not been released at this time.

More information shall become available closer to the date of the event.
