VALDOSTA — The high school football regular season may be over and state champions may have been crowned, but the battling on the gridiron isn’t over just yet.

The 2013 Battle of the Border all-star football game between senior players from south Georgia and north Florida will be held Friday night at 8 p.m. at Lowndes High School’s Martin Stadium.

The game is one of three Battle of the Border all-star games held each year throughout South Georgia. Last weekend, all-stars from southwest Georgia (Moultrie region) lost to Tallahassee-based Florida all-stars 21-14 at Moultrie’s Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The all-star games were established in order to provide senior high school football players the chance to play in front of college scouts one final time before National Signing Day, which comes on the first Wednesday in February.

Last year at Valdosta High School, the Georgia All-Stars raced out to a 23-0 halftime lead but gave way to a 23-0 second-half by Florida, who eventually won the game in overtime.

This year, players from the greater Valdosta area will face players from the greater Gainesville, Fla. region inside the Concrete Palace, where Lowndes head coach Randy McPherson will serve as the Georgia head coach.

Coaches from various schools have offered their time as assistants, including Valwood head coach Ashley Henderson and Valdosta offensive line coach Mark Loudermilk.

Overall, 11 different schools from throughout south Georgia will be represented on the Georgia Team, including 14 from both Lowndes and Valdosta, five from Cook, four from Brooks County and three from Valwood.
