Volunteers needed for South Georgia Classic

All ticket proceeds benefit local charities

VALDOSTA — Volunteer positions for the upcoming South Georgia Classic presented by First State Bank and Trust Company are still being accepted.

According to tournament officials, over 500 volunteers are needed in order to run the annual event at Valdosta’s Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.

Interested persons may volunteer their time for one of 14 different committees.

Those committees include: Admissions, beverages, caddie hospitality, clubhouse/security, construction, marshals, parking, pro-am, scoring central/communications, standard bearer, starter/announcer, transportation, volunteer village and walking scorers.

Volunteer packages are $35 and include an Adidas golf shirt, hat or visor, lunch and/or breakfast during shift, volunteer badge, two tournament tickets and one free round of golf at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, a $200 value.

“We couldn’t do this without volunteers, obviously,” said South Georgia Classic tournament manager Joerdan Simpson. “It is for a great cause, it gets you inside the ropes access and it is a great package this year. But we can’t put on the tournament without our great volunteers and all those people that donate their time.”

College students and military personnel may volunteer for free.

Volunteers can select various days to work at the tournament, but some volunteer committees are only offered on certain days.

The South Georgia Classic week begins April 22, with the first round being held April 25 and the final round being held April 28. Tickets for the event are one sale now and can be purchased at www.southgeorgiaclassic.com/tickets. All ticket proceeds will benefit a South Georgia charity, as tournament officials have announced the Tickets for Charity program in 2013.

The program was established as another way for the South Georgia Classic to give back to the community, with 100 percent of the ticket proceeds going to a charity of the purchaser’s choice.

The charities that a purchaser may choose from include: 100 Black Men of Valdosta, ACTO Valdosta, Alapaha Area Council Boy Scouts, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Georgia, Children’s Advocacy Center, Hospital Auxilary, Lowndes Associated Ministries for People (LAMP), Moody Family Support Center, Moody Youth Program, The Haven, Y.M.C.A, and Relay for Life.

Tickets for the event at $5 a day or $15 for the week.
