Lowndes’ boys track team and Valdosta’s girls team finished first at the Harmon’s Viking/Vikette Invitational on Saturday at Lowndes High School.
The Vikings earned 91 points, which was 6.5 points more than second-place Brooks County. Valdosta finished third with 70 points, Bainbridge was fourth with 56 points and Brunswick took fifth with 55.5 points. Cook finished eighth (33.5 points).
The Lady Wildcats easily won the girls’ meet, earning 127.25 points, 47.25 points more than second-place Ware County. Lowndes finished third with 63.25 points, Ponte Vedra (Fla.) Nease was fourth with 58 points and Thomas County Central took fifth with 49.25 points. Cook finished 12th (11 points) and Berrien was 15th (1 point).
Valdosta’s Stormm Phillips had a big day. The Lady Wildcats’ three-sport star (she also plays softball and basketball) won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the long jump. And she anchored Valdosta’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams, which both finished first.
In the girls 4x100 relay, Phillips teamed up with Takisha Russell, Zakirra McKinnon and Jalissa Hall to win. In the 4x400 relay, Phillips teamed with Hall, McKinnon and Lanetra Edwards.
Valdosta’s Zakirra McKinnon won the girls 300-meter hurdles, while teammate Destiny Lasane finished third. Lowndes’ Jabria Lewis took second.
Lowndes’ Jacki Pinkerton won the girls 800 and 1600 meter runs. LHS teammate Alison Peters was second in the 1600 and the 3200, while Dontoria Hitson was fourth in the 800.
Lowndes’ Jadon Long won the boys 3200-meter run. Lowndes’ Chance Roe won the boys 1600 meters, while Long was third.
Devante Watts of Lowndes won the 300-meter hurdles. Brooks County teammates Tyrys Darrisaw and Marquez Booker finished second and fourth, respectively.
Nelson Herring of Valdosta won the boys 100 meters and the triple jump, and finished second in the 200 meters.
A.J. Harper of Lowndes won the boys shot put, and teammate Michael Heard was third.
Lowndes won the 4x400 relay with Brandon Roberts, Richard Williams, Seneca Fuller, Devante Watts and Reaud Sims. Valdosta was third, with Timeran Jones, Josh Norwood, Herring and Yardley Payne.
Brooks County’s Deric Herring and DeJuan Miley finished 1-2 in the boys long jump.
Brooks won the boys 4x100 relay, with Damian Cobb, Scobby Brooks, Herring and Darrisaw running the baton. And Brooks’ B relay team (Wayne Silas, Tim Rose, Miley and Nigal Hollis) finished third.
Destiny Lasane and McKinnon, both from Valdosta, finished second and third in the girls 100-meter hurdles. Darrisaw was second in the boys 110-meter hurdles, while Marquez Booker of Brooks and Justin McCormick of Cook tied for third.
Valdosta’s Keith Lee was second in the high jump, Cook’s Zack Williams was third and Valdosta’s Yardley Payne was fourth. Terri Oglesby of Valdosta was third in the girls’ high jump.
Tre Jackson of Lowndes finished second in the discus, Bruce Parham of Cook was third and Adrian Scott of Valdosta finished fourth.
Richard Williams of Lowndes was second in the boys 800.
Lakeyda Zackery of Cook was second in the girls triple jump, while Shyla Griffin of Valdosta was third.
Edwards was fourth in the girls 400 meters.
