The Valdosta varsity baseball team split its doubleheader with Tift County on Friday night. The Wildcats earned a 6-3 win in game one, before Tift won game two, 2-1.
In game 1, Valdosta’s Jacob Davis pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs and seven hits, and striking out three. Seth Shuman went 2 for 3 and drove in a run for the Wildcats. Logan Stephens and Daniel Tefft also drove in runs. Stephens, Goodson, Drew Morrison, Bradley Felkel and Tefft had hits.
In game 2, Alex Abbott’s solo home run in the sixth inning gave Tift a 2-1 lead. Then Abbott gunned down a runner at home plate in the bottom of the sixth to preserve the lead.
Corey Jaramillo drove in Valdosta’s only run. David Posas and Felkel had the Wildcats’ other two hits. Zach Newham pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run and two hits and striking out four.
With the game one victory, the Wildcats earned their first Region 1-6A victory of the season.
Berrien hammers Brooks, 13-3
QUITMAN — The Berrien baseball team beat Brooks County 13-3 Friday night.
Dalton McMillan earned the win on the hill for the Rebels, pitching four innings and striking out four batters.
At the plate, Taylor Griner was 4 for 5 with two runs batted in, Hunter Garrett was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, Shawn Witt was 2 for 5 with an RBI and Devonte Bass was 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Berrien (11-3, 4-0 in Region 1-AA) faces Brantley County Monday at 12 p.m. The game will be played at Valdosta State’s Billy Grant Field.
Lanier County routs Clinch County
LAKELAND — The Lanier County Bulldogs earned a much needed Region 2-A victory Friday night, hammering the Clinch County Panthers 12-4.
Theo Vaggalis was 2 for 4 with three runs scored for the Bulldogs, while Avery Taylor was 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Andrew Patten drove in four runs, while Rusty Zirkle finished with two.
Lanier County is now 6-8 overall, while Clinch County is now 9-3 overall.
