VSU tennis sweeps William Carey

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Valdosta State claimed five of the six singles points to defeat William Carey 6-3 in men's tennis action at the Carson Tennis Complex Saturday.

William Carey jumped out to an early lead as it won two of the three doubles points. Arnau Sanz and Robin Semal opened the scoring with an 8-4 win over Andrew Harvin and Joachim Schemm at No. 3 while Taamo Haake and Sebastin Jasyk topped Benjamin Tahir and Jose Ruda by the same score at No. 2 to even the score. Jody Claassen and Marthinius Visser closed out doubles with an 8-6 victory over Konstantin Kutschenko and Mario Navarro at No. 1 to give WCU a 2-1 lead.

Schemm evened the match at 2-2 as he defeated Visser 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles while Navarro defeated Semal 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 to put VSU in front.

Kutschenko was leading 7-6 (7-5), 4-0 at No. 1 when Claassen was forced to retire due to injury to up the Blazer lead to 4-2 while Harvin sealed the victory with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Florian Fresse at No. 6. Jasyk claimed a 7-5, 1-6, 10-4 win over Sanz at No. 4 while Ruda defeated Haake 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 to close out the match.

The Valdosta State men defeated Mississippi College 8-1 on Thursday.

The Valdosta State women claimed two doubles points and three in singles to defeat William Carey 5-3.

Michelle Fischer and Julianna Boehm opened the scoring with an 8-3 win over Maja Vuzem and Carola Orna at No. 1 doubles while Alina Nagel and Laura Ubeda topped Sarah-Maria Spruch and Julia Angerman 8-6 at No. 2. Malin Collin and Anastasiya Zvyagintesva got the William Carey doubles point with a 9-8 (8-4) win over Jessica Tuggle and Jennifer Rink at No. 3.

Spruch evened the match when Nagel was forced to retire at No. 2 singles, but Ubeda put the Blazers back in front with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Angerman at No. 4. Boehm extended the VSU advantage with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Zvyagintesva at No. 5, but Collin defeated Tuggle 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 6. Rink closed out the match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Vuzem at No. 3.

The VSU women were swept 5-0 by fourth-ranked BYU-Hawaii on Thursday.

Both VSU teams return to action Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when it takes on Concordia.

    Others will have to wait and see what continues to take shape come Friday when teams can begin fall practice, and especially Aug. 1 when teams can suit up in pads for the first time, such as can Valdosta win its record 24th state title, or can Lowndes capture its fourth state championship under Randy McPherson, or can Valwood and coach Ashley Henderson play in its third straight GISA state championship game?
    As we start to find out the answers to those questions in just a few short weeks — the regular season is just 31 days away — there should be a few more milestones for area coaches to mark 2014 right along with the Generals getting back on the gridiron.
