Lowndes’ Victoria Barber to play at Young Harris

VALDOSTA — A large group crowded inside Lowndes’ media center Thursday morning. The majority of the people were wearing purple, the color of Young Harris College.

That is where Lowndes softball player Victoria Barber is headed this fall.

The senior Vikettes player signed her letter of her intent as a walk-on to Young Harris, a small Division II school located in the Northeast portion of the state.

“It is a very beautiful school and when I went up there to visit it was very welcoming,” Barber said. “I met with the softball team and they were very welcoming. The teachers up there, they were great.”

With her signing, Barber became the seventh Lowndes senior from the 2012 team, which finished second in Region 1-AAAAAA, to sign with a college.

“She is a great kid, a hard worker,” Lowndes head coach Stewart Thomas said. “It is great for the program.”

Barber said she has always wanted to play college softball. She began playing the sport at the age of four.

She currently serves as a first baseman and pitcher.

“I am really excited,” Barber said.

“I need some improvement but I think I am ready.”

Once Barber, who was born and raised in Lowndes County, arrives at Young Harris, she plans on majoring in special education.

“It is surrounded by mountains,” Barber said of the school.

Looking back at her high school career, she said she has no regrets, having been part of a pair of region championships.

“I love Lowndes,” Barber said. “We are supportive and we are all supportive of each other. We are like sisters. We are basically family. Most of us have been playing since we were in fifth or sixth grade.”

Barber’s announcement to sign with Young Harris came just three days after the Mountain Lions’ head coach resigned, following a 27-27 record in 2013.

Young Harris was a former NAIA school and just recently transitioned into a Division II institution that competes out of the Peach Belt Conference, with the likes of Georgia College State and North Georgia.

Of the Mountain Lions’ losses this season, two came at the hands of fourth-ranked Valdosta State in early February.
