Open Bible’s baseball team improved to 9-0 with a 14-0 win over Georgia Christian on Monday.
The Warriors scored runs in all five innings, and Nathan Infante and Matthew Infante combined on a two-hit shutout.
“It was a great day,” Open Bible head coach John Joye said. “The guys did their jobs. We got some help, yeah. When you get help, you need to make it hurt, and they did. (Nathan and Matthew) threw really good on the mound.”
“They’re a good ball club. You’ve got to give them props,” Georgia Christian head coach Donald Dawkins said. “They didn’t make mistakes, they threw strikes, they put the ball in play. As long as you’re doing that, I don’t care what level of baseball you’re at, you’re going to be successful. They did a good job of that today and we didn’t, and it showed in the score.”
Open Bible took the lead with a run in the top of the first. Colton Jenkins drew a walk to start the game, stole second and scored on a single by Nathan Infante, giving Open Bible a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors put four more runs on the scoreboard in the second. Matthew Infante walked, Luke Hannon reached on an error and Marlon Barerra walked to load the bases with one out. Then Jenkins, Patrick Eason and John William Worsley drew bases loaded walks, which scored Infante, Hannon and Barerra, respectively. Nathan Infante grounded out, but Jenkins scored on the play, and Open Bible led 5-0 after two innings.
In the top of the third, Matthew Infante reached on an error, then consecutive walks to Hannon and Barerra loaded the bases. Jenkins singled to left, scoring Infante. Then Barerra scored on a fielder’s choice, which gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead.
The Warriors added another run in the fourth. Nathan Infante led off the inning with a walk. One out later, Matthew Infante singled to left and Garcia walked to load the bases. A walk to Barerra brought home courtesy runner Samuel Harrell, giving Open Bible an 8-0 lead.
Georgia Christian got two quick outs in the top of the fifth. But then Open Bible exploded for six more runs. Nathan Infante singled, Caleb Bowden walked and Matthew Infante reached on an error, loading the bases. Holden Highsmith came off the bench to pinch hit and drew a bases loaded walk, allowing Nathan Infante to score. Then Bowden scored on a walk to pinch hitter Evan White, making it 10-0. Barerra singled to right, and Matthew Infante and Highsmith scored. Jenkins walked to load the bases, then Eason singled to right, scoring White and Barerra, giving Open Bible a 14-0 lead.
The game was called after the fifth inning, due to the mercy rule.
Nathan Infante was the winning pitcher. He allowed no runs and no hits in three innings. He also had two hits at the plate.
Eason and Barerra drove in three runs apiece for Open Bible. Barerra also scored three runs. Jenkins, Harrell and Matthew Infante scored two runs apiece.
Open Bible was helped out by 17 walks.
“(Our hitters) are showing enough discipline to make guys throw strikes. If they don’t throw them, they’ll take a walk,” Joye said.
