VSU softball drops pair to UNA

Valdosta State got a home run from Courtney Albritton to leadoff Game 2 Saturday and a home run from Heather Robinson in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough for the Blazers to salvage part of the Gulf South Conference doubleheader in Florence, Ala.

North Alabama, which won 3-0 in Game 1, twice rallied back against the Blazers in the second game, winning 4-2 in 11 innings. The Lions and No. 18 Blazers complete the three-game series today at 2 p.m.

After getting blanked by North Alabama’s Hillary Carpenter in Saturday’s opener, Albritton homered to open Game 2. It was all the Blazers (17-8, 5-5) could muster against BreeAnna Blevins until the ninth when Robinson, a freshman from Lowndes, put VSU back up with a solo home run. But the Lions (20-5, 9-2) tied it in the bottom half when Libby Olinger delivered a two-out single. Two innings later, Courtney Phillips ended it with a one-out, two-run home run.

VSU freshman pitcher Maci Fletcher lasted into the ninth before Caitlyn Calhoun relieved. Blevins went nine innings for UNA before Carpenter relieved and didn’t allow a Blazer to reach base.

Albritton led the Blazers with three of their nine hits, while April Collins added two.

In Game 1, VSU managed only two hits — Collins and Hannah Strickland — against Carpenter, who walked two and also hit Strickland with a pitch.

The Lions did all their damage against VSU starter Brianna Hancock in the fifth as Carey Grace Peebles smashed a two-run home run and Phillips followed with a double, later scoring on an Olinger single. Calhoun relieved in the frame, allowing just one hit in two innings.
