VALDOSTA — Echols County girls beat Irwin Couny

STATENVILLE — The Echols County girls’ basketball team improved to 2-4 (1-1 in region) Tuesday night, beating Irwin County 48-46.

Kiyondra Williams led Echols County with a double-double, scoring 20 points, hauling in 14 rebounds. She also had three assists and five steals on the night. Echols County visits Cook Friday night.

Vikings top Trojans, 74-55

QUITMAN — Lowndes improved to 7-2 on the season with a 74-55 win over Brooks County Tuesday night in Quitman. Senior Tremayne Tippins had 20 points, while Justin Williams  finished with 17 points. Eric Henderson added 16 points, while Larry Brown and Kenny Moore each finished with 10 points.

Valwood boys beat Fullington, 62-48

VALDOSTA — The Valwood boys’ varsity baskeball team defeated Fullington Academy 62-48 Tuesday night in Valdosta.

Zack Sabino led the Valiants with 16 points, while DeAndre Lambert finished with 11. Rashad Mathis, who recently joined the team following the completion of football season, contributed with eight points. Valwood is now 3-3 on the season and hosts Georgia Christian Thursday night.

Victory Christian has mixed results

VALDOSTA — The Victory Christian Eagles fell to New Testament 49-39 Monday night,  before tying Grace Christian, 50-50, Tuesday night.Dalton Sparks led the team in scoring both nights.

On Monday, Sparks scored 19 points and added 28 on Tuesday. Jon Robson had 10 points Monday and 11 Tuesday.

  • Lowndes_McPherson.jpg Milestones on tap for upcoming season

    Some milestones are destined to occur, like when Georgia Christian hosts David Emanuel on Aug. 22 in the Generals’ first varsity football game since the late 1960s.
    Others will have to wait and see what continues to take shape come Friday when teams can begin fall practice, and especially Aug. 1 when teams can suit up in pads for the first time, such as can Valdosta win its record 24th state title, or can Lowndes capture its fourth state championship under Randy McPherson, or can Valwood and coach Ashley Henderson play in its third straight GISA state championship game?
    As we start to find out the answers to those questions in just a few short weeks — the regular season is just 31 days away — there should be a few more milestones for area coaches to mark 2014 right along with the Generals getting back on the gridiron.
