Valdosta State senior forward Josh Sparks has been named the Gulf South Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
Sparks won the honor for the second time in his career after leading VSU to a 1-1 GSC mark last week. The Savannah native averaged a double-double on the week, averaging 13.5 points and 11.5 rebounds, while also averaging 5.0 blocks, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He shot 62.5 percent from the field, where he made 10-of-16 field goals, and was successful on 7-of-8 free throws.
Sparks opened the week with 13 points and eight rebounds in an 83-70 win at Union, before saving his best for last, as the Blazers fell 95-94 in overtime at North Alabama. Against the Lions, Sparks netted 14 points and 15 rebounds and blocked nine shots, the most by a GSC player since the 1998-99 season.
