Lowndes pounds Thomas County Central, 14-2

VALDOSTA — Lowndes’ baseball team routed Thomas County Central 14-2 on Tuesday at Noel George Field.

The Vikings scored 10 runs in the first three innings, on their way to a 12-run victory.

Lowndes pounded out 12 hits in the win. Cam Buescher went 2 for 3 with a three-run home run and three runs scored in the win. Blake Smith was 3 for 3, scored three runs and had two RBIs. David Wortham went 2 for 3, scored three runs and also drove in a run. Garrett Fuller went 2 for 2 and scored three runs. Garrett Hill drove in three runs, and Dalton Register and Ty Harwell had two RBIs apiece.

Lowndes started the rout by scoring four runs in the first inning. Harwell’s double to left drove in Smith. Register followed with a two-run double, bringing home Buescher and courtesy runner Mason Miller. Register moved to third on a passed ball, then tagged up and scored on Hill’s sacrifice fly, which gave the Vikings a 4-0 lead.

Lowndes added four more runs in the bottom of the second. Fuller led off with a triple to right, and scored when Wortham followed with an RBI single. The Vikings loaded the bases, then Wortham scored on Harwell’s sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Hill lined a single to left, scoring Smith and Buescher and extending the Vikings’ lead to 8-0.

The Vikings made it 10-0 with two more runs in the third. Smith drove in Fuller and Wortham with a two-run single to left.

Thomas County Central scored a run on an error in the top of the fourth and another run on Alex Dukes’ RBI single in the fifth.

But Lowndes ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Fuller and Wortham walked, then Smith singled to right, bringing home Fuller.

Then Buescher stepped up to the plate and drove a pitch over the left field fence for a three-run homer. That made the score 14-2, and it ended the game, due to the mercy rule.

Lowndes pitcher C.J. Johnson gave up just one hit, allowed one unearned run and struck out six in 3 2/3 innings of work. Andy Perkins pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for the Vikings, allowing one run and one hit and striking out three.

Dukes had both of Thomas County Central’s hits.

Lowndes (16-8) will travel to Lee County today for a 6 p.m. game.
