The Open Bible baseball team advanced to the region championship game with a 16-1 win over the Byne Saints on Tuesday.
The Warriors (15-2) will host Appling Christian in the championship game on Friday at 4 p.m.
Caleb Bowden picked up the win for Open Bible. He gave up one run and four hits, and struck out five.
After two scoreless innings, the Warriors exploded for 11 runs in the third inning, sending 16 batters to the plate. Colton Jenkins reached second on a throwing error and stole third. Patrick Eason was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third. Then Nathan Infante doubled to right center, allowing Jenkins and Eason to score. Bowden walked, then Matthew Infante singled to score Nathan Infante, giving Open Bible a 3-0 lead.
Eddy Garcia walked to load the bases and Holden Highsmith also walked, bringing home Samuel Harrell, who was a courtesy runner for Bowden. Infante scored on a wild pitch. Luke Hannon’s single scored Garcia. Then Highsmith scored on a throwing error, and Hannon scored on a single by Jenkins, making it 8-0. Jenkins stole second and moved to third on a balk. Eason was hit by a pitch once again. Jenkins and Eason scored on a throwing error on a ground ball by Nathan Infante, who later scored on a wild pitch to give the Warriors an 11-0 lead.
Byne scored its only run in the top of the fourth.
Then Open Bible added five more runs to end the game on the mercy rule. Marlon Barrera singled to right and stole second and Jenkins reached on an error. Eason singled, scoring Barrera. Nathan Infante was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bowden walked to bring home Jenkins. Eason scored on an error, then Matthew Infante walked to load the bases again. Garcia singled to left field, scoring Nathan Infante. Then Bowden stole home to give Open Bible a 16-1 lead and end the game due to the mercy rule.
Jenkins, Eason and Nathan Infante each had two hits and scored three runs for the Warriors.
