Georgia Sparks win championship in Orlando

VALDOSTA — The Georgia Sparks Basketball Teams traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in Spring Fling 2 Super Region Tournament which took place at Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. This was a busy weekend for the Sparks as they had three teams and over 30 parents.

The sixth grade Sparks had by far their best showing with a 3-1 overall record; only losing in the semi- finals by 10 points to a very good team out of Jacksonville, Florida (Lady Rams). The Sparks were lead all weekend by Aerionna Tucker, Sakendra Paulk, Trinity Jones and Naomi Jefferson. The girls really made a name for themselves as the small team that plays hard and never gives up.

The seventh grade Sparks played hard and finished with a 2-2 record, losing in the quarter-finals to the eventual champions. The girls played hard despite playing without their starting point guard, battling every game.

The tenth grade Sparks won it all with a record of 5-0 and winning our first championship after finishing second last year.

In the first game the Sparks defeated EOTO by a score of 61-38. The second game the Sparks defeated the Florida Lightning by a score of 63-37. The third game the Sparks defeated the Florida Starzz by a score of 63-34. In the semi-finals game, the Sparks defeated Next Level Hoops by a score of 62-33.

In the final and championship game, the Sparks were able to defeat the Miami Suns by a score of 61-31 to capture the championship.

The Sparks were led all weekend by Atyanna Gaulden with an average of 21 points per game, Jomekia Morine with an average of 12 points per game, and Keshaundra Price with an average of 10 points per game.

The Sparks will work with their high school teams during June before starting their July College Exposure Tour when they travel to Tennessee, New Orleans and Atlanta. These tournaments provide the players exposure to over 500 college coaches.

The Sparks will host several fundraisers to raise funds for these trips, and are always looking for sponsors. If you would like more information or to make a donation please call Coach Rick Jones at 229-425-3499 or email brotherrick@windstream.net
