W. Florida takes pair from VSU

An early scoring drought cost the Valdosta State women’s basketball team its fourth straight loss.

The Blazers lost 67-53 to host West Florida  in Pensacola, Fla., on Monday after scoring just four points in the first 10 minutes.

That slow start allowed the Argonauts, who improved to 14-7 and 9-6 in the Gulf South Conference, a chance to open up a 15-point lead. Jasmine Wigfall scored eight of her game-high 20 points during that early stretch.

VSU fell to 10-12 and 5-11 in the GSC, despite 12 points from Brooke Satterfield. She hit four of six 3-pointers as she scored a season high.

The Argonauts dominated on the boards and used that advantage to defeat the visiting Blazers on Monday.

West Florida (4-17, 3-12) outrebounded VSU (13-9, 7-9) 51-25 overall and 22-6 on the offensive glass on the way to outscoring the Blazers 25-7 in second-chance points. The Argos used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to take the lead for good.

Ellis Young had 23 points and 18 rebounds for UWF, while Nate Johnson added 21 and 11. Larry Stone and Blake Justice led the Blazers with 18 each.
