David Posas' two-run single was enough to lift Valdosta past host Newnan in the first game of a Class AAAAAA first-round playoff series Friday. Behind Posas' hit, the Wildcats won 3-2 in nine innings before falling 7-2 in Game 2.
Valdosta and Newnan will meet in the decisive third game of the best-of-3 series at noon today.
Seth Shuman threw seven innings of one-run ball to give Valdosta a chance in the opener until its offense got untracked. That happened when Posas came through with the big hit in the top of the ninth. Daniel Tefft, who has signed with Mercer, drove in Valdosta's first run.
Luke Ard threw the final two innings for Valdosta, allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth, in earning the win.
The Wildcats got off to a quick start in the nightcap as well, taking a 2-0 lead into the fifth. There, though, Newnan got untracked for four runs to take the lead for good. Austin Lieupo started for Valdosta.
Valdosta coach Bart Shuman said no decision had been made on the Wildcats' starter for Game 3, although John Eager may get the nod. A final decision won't be made, though, until the coaching staff met and discussed the matter Shuman said.
