Lowndes tennis teams beat Colquitt

VALDOSTA — On Tuesday afternoon, Lowndes’ tennis teams hosted Colquitt County in their last region match of the regular season. Lowndes’ boys swept the Packers 5-0, while the girls defeated the Lady Packers 4-1.

For Lowndes’ boys, Samuel Price won 6-3, 7-5, John Fuller won 6-4, 6-2 and Ben Burkhalter won 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, Trent Parker and Dylan Farmer won 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, while Josh Fricker and Zack Ridge won 6-2, 6-2.

In the girls’ match, Lowndes’ Taylor Vinge won 6-2, 6-0, Alden Minick won 6-0, 6-0 and Emily Singletary won 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Lori Taylor and Laina Taylor won 6-1, 6-1.

Lowndes’ boys are currently (13-1) for the season. The LHS girls are 12-2.

The Lowndes tennis teams will travel to Jekyll Island on Friday to compete in the Golden Isles Invitational.

    Four weeks ago, the Brooks County Trojans took Highway 84 west to Thomas County for a 7-on-7 passing league and on Tuesday morning the Yellow Jackets returned the favor, traveling to Quitman for the second 7-on-7 of the summer between the two teams.
    At the first 7-on-7, Thomas County Central had not yet decided on a replacement at quarterback after the school's all-time leading rusher Adam Choice departed for Clemson, but junior Eli Taylor began to make strides towards being the Jackets’ starting signal caller. On Tuesday Taylor's competition got a chance to shine.

    Another round, another first-place finish for Valdosta State’s Courtney Albritton.
    Albritton, the Blazers’ junior softball standout, was the leading vote-getter in the semifinal round of the NCAA’s Favorite Elite 89 winner contest with 1,483 votes in the two-day semifinal round that included 30 athletes. In the week-long first round, Albritton racked up 1,971 votes to lead the 89-person field.
