Blazers sweep Golden Rams Tuesday night

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State’s volleyball team put on a dominant performance against Albany State on Tuesday evening, sweeping the Golden Rams, 25-13, 25-20, 25-17.

Valdosta State was able to do it with a balanced offensive attack. Both Nikki McDaniel and Katie Onushko had 13 kills each. Destiny Berry had 11 kills, while reigning Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week Tania Tauiliili added 10 kills.

Berry led the team in attacking percentage at .471, while Tauiliili hit .421. The outside hitters, McDaniel and Onushko, hit .370 and .314, respectively.

Ashley Lala gave out 29 assists, while Hope Ripsam passed out 19 assists in the third set. Reigning GSC Defensive Player of the Week Chelsea Luttfring (the conference leader in digs) led VSU with 11 digs. Onushko had nine, while McDaniel and Jennifer Bryan had eight and seven digs, respectively.

The Blazers had five emphatic blocks, with Tauiliili in on four of them, but Albany State outblocked VSU, 6-5.

For the Golden Rams, Sharme Ridley finished with 11 kills, while Jennifer Johnson had 20 assists. Ridley added 12 digs for the double-double, while Johnson and libero Adrienne Morris had 10 digs each.

Valdosta State’s defense held ASU to just a .106 attacking percentage while hitting .296. The best set for VSU was the third, where the Blazers hit .333, with 19 kills on 42 attacks.

The Blazers will look to continue their impressive play on senior day against West Alabama at 7 p.m. Friday at The Complex.
