TIFTON —  The Lowndes Vikettes softball team will now be known as the Region 1-AAAAAA Region Championship Vikettes after taking down the Tift County Lady Devils on Tuesday.

The Vikette went up against a pitcher who was nearly flawless. Adriana Durden pitched 14.1 innings, gave up five hits and only one earned run. The Vikettes were able to overcome her efforts, however, and swept the doubleheader on a pair of 1-0 wins that came in the final inning.

Tift Co. had only lost once all season. They also came into the game undefeated in the Region 1-AAAAAA softball race.

After the win by the Vikettes, they will finish the regular season in first, with Tift Co. finishing second.

Lowndes had only one loss in the region to Coffee and ended their season with the region title.

The two sides played a scoreless contest through seven innings of the second matchup in the doubleheader. Vikettes pitcher Crystal Eason was the starter and went six innings before being replaced with first game starter Haley Fowler.

The eighth inning started extra innings for the game and included the tiebreaker rule. In extras, each team begins the inning with a runner on second.

The Vikettes had LaGiah Woods on base as their runner. Jada McGillberry sacrificed her to third, sending Wendy Palmer to the plate. Palmer hit the ball to second base, where it was not a clean catch, allowing Woods to score and give the Vikettes the win and the title.

The Vikettes also had a senior day game on Saturday, in which three seniors, LaGiah Woods, Summer Barker, and Wendy Palmer, were honored. The Vikettes won both their games that day.

The Vikettes finish 24-3-1 on the season and will prepare for the state playoffs beginning in two weeks.
